Remembering the people I met

When I first stepped down on Canadian land, I had an impression that Halifax was all grey rock and swirling snow. A cold, cold place. However, to my relief, the people were far from that. Warm, friendly and welcoming. I felt like… part of a family. At first, I walked around with new friends that I’ve made on the journey, but soon, ALL the women of Halifax were our friends. All of them were very nice, and we soon had our tea and crumpet parties with them as well. It wasn’t just the women, it was EVERYONE. The men were so helpful. It reminds me of what days back in Britain felt like (which is just a few days ago, but it felt like a looong time).

First, we all started out as strangers, and polite acquaintances. But in less than a span of 1 day, I felt like the whole entire city was friends with me.

So, have you ever been to a new place, or meeting new neighbours? How was it for you?

I moved from America to Canada, and made a pretty smooth transition, thanks to the people i met there. They were like you said, welcoming and i settled in pretty quickly. It was actually a friend that lived down the street who told me about the job at the gun factory and that's where i spend most of the time during world war 2 at.

yes, when my daughter and wife and i moved from Ontario to British Columbia, we were greeted by many Japanese people. the whole province was filled with them! i remember old kind Hiroshi, he was my first neighbor and a fellow farmer at that. He taught me many ancient Japanese farming techniques that no one here up north would have known. he was my first friend and my oldest one too. :)

I was a little girl when world war 2 begun. I met a lot of new people. In a way, the war made my neighbors and me closer. I became real good friends with my neighbor David, who so happens to be a baker. I also became friends with my old teacher, whom I didn’t know lived right beside me! It did bring us all closer, because in a way, we all sort of relied on each other to survive. I guess World War 2 brought the worst and the best in people! I actually do wonder what happened to the friends I made sometimes!
